I spent much of yesterday helping Miriam with her new website. It’s coming along.
There was a football game at UF on Saturday. The game was set to start at 1:00PM, and I have to be at the radio station by 11:00AM every Saturday. Since this is the first home game of the season (Hurricane Frances caused the scheduled season opener to be postponed), people were crazy. I got to campus by 10:30, and already every parking space was taken. Trying to explain that I was an employee who had to actually work, and was not just another fanatic, was a chore. In any case, I was able to park on the grass near the Reitz Union, and I made it to work just in time.
It looks now like Hurrican Ivan will miss us. This is good news, because we don’t need any more flooding and fallen trees. Plus, I know people who are still without electricity.

Did I just discover the greatest bargain in history? Perhaps. Yesterday I was at … an undisclosed location, when I came across bins of LPs for sale. Mixed in were numerous laserdiscs of complete operas and ballets on labels like Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, London and Pioneer. I recognized many of them as being videos that were not issued on DVD. I asked the girl how much they were, and she said they were priced like the LPs: $1 each, or ten for $3. I started freakin’. I grabbed every one I saw that I didn’t already have on DVD. In all, I got thirty-three different complete operas and ballets, plus a couple LPs. My total: $12. But I panicked at first, because I thought they only accepted cash. When the girl explained a check was fine I was excited, because my checkbook was in the car, or so I thought. It turns out I used my last check on rent the other day. So I had to make a mad dash to find an ATM while she held the booty behind the counter. When I got back they were all ready, and I made my way to my car with my arms overflowing with laserdisc goodness. A passer-by smiled at me as she saw me struggling to open the car door. I’m wasn’t ashamed though. A million attractive girls laughing at me can’t diminish the glory of finding a bargain like that. Now I probably ought to buy a laserdisc player.
I can’t believe it’s already Friday. This week flew by. Now it appears that next week we’re going to have another hurricane. I don’t know what’s happening here, but I have lived in Florida since I was born, and we have never had so many storms so close together. It doth surely blow.
UPDATE: The “undisclosed location” referenced above was, in fact, the Smathers Library bookstore on campus.

This is what things looked like on Sunday night with no electricity. At the time I was a little frustrated because friends in town reported that their power was still on, and, in fact, didn’t go out at all. In the end, though, I feel lucky to have had my electricity restored within 24 hours, since so many people are without power still.
So, I drank about a gallon of Gatorade this weekend, and ate cold Beefaroni from a can while listening to weather reports on a battery powered radio. It’s sad, but I discovered just how useless everything I have is without electricity. I stared at my 2,000 CDs and thought about how, without power, they are just pieces of plastic.
It rained non-stop from Saturday night until Tuesday morning. Behind my apartment used to be some woods and a pasture. Now there’s a lake. Roads near my place are closed, and trees and telephone poles are broken all around.
I’m glad it’s over.

Freakin’ hurricane has to go and ruin Labor Day weekend. I’ve been watching the storm as you can see from this satellite photograph. The good news is that it’s destroying someone else’s home and not mine.
Jeff and Sandi are in town. I saw them last night for a little while. We didn’t do anything. Actually, it was kind of nice talking about tugboats and model submarines with Jeff. It’s great how sometimes, no matter how much changes, things really stay the same.
We took Lucy and Bela to get their rabies shots yesterday. Gainesville Animal Hospital West has some good vets. The cats don’t think so, since they don’t really like needles being jabbed in their skin, but they’re nice there, and they got us in only hours after my phone call for an appointment.

Here we go again. Hurricane Frances appears to be headed toward Florida. This is not a good time, since I was looking forward to the long weekend. We’ll keep an eye on this one. I don’t want a repeat of Hurricane Charley’s shenanigans.
What will we do if we need to evacuate? Well, I don’t know, but it isn’t going to be fun. Just try putting Bela in a pet carrier.
I’m feeling pretty down about politics today. The Republican sponsored “Swiftboat Veterans for Truth” have done considerable damage to Kerry’s reputation, from what I am reading. Of course, I am convinced that the press is mostly responsible for this, since they appear to have done little to point out the facts, which are that the allegations are baseless, and have been contradicted by all the evidence. The print media does a better job at telling the truth than the TV news. Forget the radio. In any case, it will be a shame if Kerry loses because of this.
