We Are Small People Amongst Large Things
The terrible bridge collapse in Minneapolis yesterday has me thinking about the degree to which our lives are intertwined with technology that seems at once simple, but, in truth is beyond most of our abilities to comprehend. For instance, we live and work and shop in buildings that are created by intelligent people with good intentions. We travel in vehicles that we trust were built to exacting specifications. Our cities, great and small, are connected by a vast network of roads that cross mountains and span rivers. We all go about our business taking for granted that we are safe, but the unfortunate truth is that sometimes things fall down.
This disaster, though, is noteworthy to me, as it plays on a fear I have had since childhood – a fear created by another bridge collapse.
