I just picked up a pair of these speakers still in the origanal boxes. A guy I work with purchased them new in Japan while in the service. I scored the speakers, Marantz model 22 receiver, Sony TC-651 reel to reel and Elac Miracord 770h turntable all for $50. It is taking everything within me not to hook these speakers up and see what they have. Looks like I have a winter project of restoing some speakers that are worth the time and effort, I'm sure I'll be rewarded for my efforts. I was having a same problem with the mid after my first speaker restoration (and that was AR-3A). I was able to fix mine after running into this post. I replaced the pots with l-pads with resistors.
