I don’t care if it did kill a bunch of children, I love Peter Pan peanut butter! It’s been off the shelf since February’s salmonella outbreak, the most interesting aspect thereof, to me, being that ConAgra, Peter Pan’s corporate parent, also, apparently, made Great Value peanut butter, the store brand of Wal-Mart.
I had three jars of the so-called “tainted” Peter Pan, one of which I had already eaten to no ill-effect, and two which Miriam forbade me to eat. During the embargo I was forced to purchase an alternative, first Jif, then, Skippy, which I found a reasonable substitute. But Peter Pan’s the best, and I am glad to have it back. Huzzah!

As hot and sticky and tiring as it is, I am enjoying riding a bike to work. It’s good for my heart, and, assuming I don’t get run over, good for the rest of my body, too.
The downside? The weather can occasionally not cooperate, like it did today, when, upon leaving work I saw that not only had it already rained, but the sky to the north was black, and lightning was frequent. I managed to make it home, though I was scared the entire ride. The wind was against me, and it was blowing something fierce, slowing me down when I was trying to pedal as fast as I could. But I made it home alive. And, even if it weren’t drenched from the rain, my shirt would still have been soaked in sweat.
Thanks again to Sandi and Jeff for the free bikes. Suckers.

Moggie and I are just back from the veterinarian’s office where she was seen for her sneezing and leaky eye. The vet is a traumatic experience for any pet, but Moggie handles it with such dignity. Unlike the other cats that passed through the waiting room in one direction or another while I was there, Moggie never made a peep of complaint. She didn’t struggle against the doctor as she was pulled from her carrier. Only when she had to get a shot did she jump, and not from the needle itself, but moments later when the medicine was in her, and she realized that was cold from being in the refrigerator. Then she went willingly back into the carrier for the return trip home.
She’s a sweet kitty and I hope she gets well soon.

My back is killing me again. I woke up Friday feeling that it was stiff. Saturday was terribly uncomfortable. This morning when I awoke I could barely set my body upright. I place the blame squarely on our terrible mattress. It’s awful, and I am vowing not to sleep on it again.
Meanwhile, Miriam has a bummy leg from her bicycle mishap, and she has to be careful with it. So, were both invalids here.

The New York Times today clearly lays out the deficiencies of America’s health care system in an editorial. It points out where we’re good and where we’re not. Unfortunately, where we’re not is quite a few important areas, and, considering our prosperity as a nation, a scandal.
